Paul is referencing Mal 1:2,3 for which there are additional notes on what the emotions of love and hate mean in reference to our Lord.

The Lord loved the spiritual nature of Jacob.

The Lord hated the carnality of Esau.

The OldTestament perspective on the Lord was not the Truth.

Jesus is the Truth!

When we hear that it is not the Lord`s will that any perish, we understand that the statement about Esau was based on perception and not Truth.

Esau was a CarnalMinded individual. We know that the CarnalMind is enmity with the Lord.

The Lord loved Esau but hated his CarnalMind.

The fact that Esau sold his birthright meant that Esau was not concerned with the Lord`s plan. He was only concerned about his physical needs.
