Persecution for Christ`s sake is the affliction that Paul speaks of.<p>When the pure Gospel of perfect Grace is preached there will be persecution from the religious leadership whose focus is control, gaining it by teaching salvation by works using fear of condemnation and loss of relationship for leverage.
