The Old Covenant has passed away.   

No man puts a piece of new cloth unto an old garment, for that which is put in to fill it up takes from the garment, and the rent is made worse. Mat 9:16 Law and Grace are incompatible.      Jesus is alluding to the fact that the Old Man is not salvageable, that a New Man is required to receive the Gospel and His Holy Spirit.

Neither do men put new wine into old bottles: else the bottles break, and the wine runs out, and the bottles perish: but they put new wine into new bottles, and both are preserved. Mat 9:17 Legalism and Grace are incompatible.     Legalism demands correct performance to receive benefits.     Grace requires faith in the finished work of Christ Jesus and nothing else to access its benefits.      Jesus was illustrating how that we must be new bottles to receive the new wine.     The New Birth precedes Spirit Baptism.

In that he says, A new covenant, he has made the first old.     Now that which decays and waxes old is ready to vanish away. Heb 8:13 Paul preached the Gospel of Grace Through Faith which stands completely on its own with no dependence on prior covenants or standards for righteousness.      However, some believers then and now still hang on to performance aspects of the law as requirements for Spirit Salvation.     This is error.      Forgiveness of sins is a done deal Heb 8:12.      Eternal Life in the New Birth comes by faith in Christ Jesus Rom 6:23.      We then walk by faith in the Word so that we experience Abundant Life Joh 7:38.      Salvation is two-part: Spirit Salvation and Soul Salvation.         → Spirit Salvation is instantaneous through faith In Christ Jesus.         → Soul Salvation will occur at the return of Christ when we are translated.
